Coach Nielsen's Ice Hockey Drills

Coach Nielsen Interviewed by Copper and Blue Writer Derek Zona (Edmonton Oilers)

Last week Derek contacted me to get my opinion on running the power play from behind the net like Gretzky used to do. If you are interested, here is the link to the article he wrote.

    having said that about the Behind the Net PP, which formation do you find the most advantageous ?

    • Pops;

      As I say in the article, I don’t believe there is any one “right” way to run a PP. I really like the umbrella and the 1-3-1 version of the umbrella but you have to have the right quarterback in those formations or you could find yourself in trouble very quickly. I prefer to run the PP off the half wall because I am a bit more conservative than other coaches. It really comes down to personnel on the ice and how aggressive a coach wants to be that will determine what is the best formation to use. Overall I would say if I had the right personnel I would run an umbrella PP and hope to light the lamp 20% of the time.
